Project initiated by Charleroi Bouwmeester.
From the construction of the Fortress of Charleroi in 1666 to the dismantling of the city’s ramparts in the 18th century; from its mining and industrial heritage, which gave rise to the distinctive slag heap landscape of Charleroi, through the excavation of the Charleroi–Brussels canal, to the major urban transformation works currently reshaping the city, the history of Charleroi has been marked by large-scale dynamics that continually reinvent the relationship between the city and its ground, its soil, its landscape.
The reception spaces of the Charleroi Administrative City will bring together a wide range of public services for citizens, and as such, they must express the permanence and stability of the City of Charleroi. Indeed, the transformations the city has undergone have at times challenged its stability, economically, politically, and culturally. In response, we propose to provide new foundations for the City of Charleroi.
